Local FAQ

I put together these frequently asked questions to allow people unfamiliar with the area to get to know it a bit better. Have a question? Send me an email!

How easy is it to get to Anacortes and Whidbey Island?

Very! Highway 20 is just off of Interstate 5 in Skagit County. Head west for about 16 miles and you will arrive at Anacortes. If you want to travel to Whidbey Island, take the turnoff just before you get to Anacortes off Highway 20 OR you can take a ferry from Mukilteo to arrive at the south end of the island.

I am going to be taking a ferry to the San Juan Islands. What do I need to know?

You can always check for up-to-date ferry information at the Washington State Department of Transportation website. There is so much great information on there including travel cameras, ferry dock cameras, ferry schedule information and outages, and more. I do suggest making a reservation if you are taking a ferry to the San Juan Islands.

What’s so great about the Anacortes area?

Anacortes and Fidalgo Island are very special in terms of the setting. We are almost surrounded by water, and it seems like there are great views no matter where you go! Having the ferry right here is special too, and you can easily waste the day away watching the ferries and ship canal traffic.

There are many historic buildings in Downtown Anacortes as well as neighborhoods with many historic homes. Anacortes is oozing with character!

What recreation is available in Anacortes and the surrounding area?

From a recreation standpoint, we have parks and trails throughout the area, including Deception Pass State Park which has an extensive trail system that supports walking, hiking, biking, and more, and boasts one of the best bridges and settings in North America.

Boating is what Anacortes is all about with multiple marinas, places to rent boats of all kinds, kayaking, and more.

But I am more of a creative type!

Fantastic! Anacortes has a thriving art community. The first Friday of each month has a gallery art walk. The Anacortes Art Festival has over 250 artists and takes place the first weekend in August. Anacortes has a choir and Fidalgo DanceWorks.

In addition to the Farmer’s Market (held throughout the year on Saturdays – every other Saturday in winter), there are plenty of big events in Anacortes from the afore-mentioned Arts and Waterfront Festivals and more!
